Myanmar Rice Federation on 21 September stated that its delegation will make trips to Europe and Africa incoming October for creating new customer countries so as to prevent impact on Myanmar’s rice market
based on changed demand of customer countries.
According to the Ministry of Commerce, Myanmar sends rice to 61 countries and broken rice to 41 countries. During the period from October 2018 to August 2019, Myanmar earned more than US$650 million from export of rice and broken rice, 60 percent of which came from China.
If China changes its demand in rice market, Myanmar’s export rice market will face great loss. To prevent it,
oficials of Myanmar Rice Federation and rice businesspersons will make trips to European countries and
African countries in coming October.
EU countries lifted tax exemption for long shape rice of Myanmar and Cambodia not to harm rice production of EU member countries. However, such a type of rice is not exported by Myanmar. Hence, the Myanmar delegation will hold meetings with EU oficials on taking tax exemption for Myanmar rice.
Moreover, the delegation will seek new customer countries in African countries. The delegation will comprise officials of the federation, the government, the Ministry of Commerce and those from paddy sector.
Till today in 2018-19 fiscal year, Myanmar has sent some 500,000 tons of rice and more than 1,800 tons of broken rice to African countries.
